Abortion | Modern Day Comparison to Slavery: Letter to President Obama (With Response from White House)

Today I sent a letter to President Obama drawing parallels between abortion and slavery. I hope this letter might influence or change peoples perspective about our constitutional rights and abortion by showing you the same arguments that were used by slave owners are used by pro-choice people.

Deer President Obama,

We certainly have come a long way since 1863 when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln. At that time America was in the third year of a bloody war that claimed the lives of approximately 620,000 men. All slavery has been abolished in the U.S., African Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Whites have the same rights under federal, state and local laws. Americans elected an African American to the highest elected position in the U.S. as president in 2008. A moment in history that would have brought tears to the eyes of all those who were oppressed as slaves. Although we have made these accomplishments we have a long way to go.  There is still one class that does not have the same liberties or freedom that is constantly persecuted and ignored in a way that draws comparisons to slavery.

In 1857 the Supreme Court decided that Dred Scott could not be free because he was a slave owner’s property.  They didn’t view him as human, but property and it was the right of the slave owner to decide what to do with his property. The Supreme Court also determined that the constitution did not apply to blacks because they were inferior, they couldn’t survive on their own or intelligent enough to make their own decisions. In 1973 the Supreme Court ruled that a woman has the right to terminate her pregnancy by the means of an abortion allowable through the 14th amendment “No person was allowed to be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process.”  They concluded a fetus cannot survive without the mother and is the mother's property; it was inferior to a human being. The court used the same fallacies that were used to justify slavery.

In 1781 Elizabeth Freeman, at the time Bett a slave in Massachusetts won her freedom through the Massachusetts Supreme Court because of the clause in the Declaration of Independence “All men are created equal.” If we apply this same clause to abortion all abortion will be outlawed immediately and indefinitely. If a fetus is considered created equal to all other human beings at the time of creation / inception then they too have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The only exception would be if their rights would infringe upon the rights of others.

Since Roe vs Wade there have been over 57,406,011 abortions in the U.S. nearly 93 times the amount of deaths lost in the fight against slavery. Of course there will be political fallout. Not everyone will agree. That didn’t stop Abraham Lincoln; he was willing to go to war and pay for the liberty of others with the deaths of his own men and eventually his own life. This is what makes a great man and president. He was able to make a tough decision even with great consequences.

Too many lives have been lost because of unwanted pregnancies or inconvenience a child would bring. Before we try to create excuses or reasons for the rights of the property owner let us not forget the property is a human and is entitled to the same rights we share in this great nation.
