Salvation is a process not an event, that must be walked out every day through trials and tribulations and having done all, to stand firm, stand (Ephesians 6:13-14). More on the theory of once saved always saved is below as well as rebuttals to the theory.
Theory one
Some people feel that if we are truly saved we will not turn from Jesus or sin and thus when we become saved we are always saved because we will not sin.
Rebuttal One
Proverbs 24:16 For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; But the wicked are overthrown by calamity.
Theory Two
When we repent and accept Jesus our salvation cannot be taken away, it is eternal. Because our salvation is eternal God forgives all our past, present and future sins. This theory also states that salvation is based upon our belief in God not necessarily our relationship or walk. The belief is based upon a passage in John.
John 3:15-18
15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”[a]
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
Rebuttal Two
Matthew 21:11 The Parable of the Wedding Feast.
11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless.
13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
In this passage we see that a man who was invited to the wedding and arrived was cast out because of his lack of effort for preparation. We can view the invitation and admittance into the feast as the man's salvation and acceptance of Jesus but the man was rejected on his day of judgment. We know the man was invited due to the following scripture (14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”)
Further scripture
Matthew 7:22-24 (King James Version)
22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Conclusion
If once saved always saved was true then why was an unprepared man cast out of a wedding feast due to his lack of preparation? Maybe the man was not saved? This cannot be true because the man was invited and went to the wedding. The only difference between him and the other guest was his garments "For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart. Samuel 16:7”
It is important to remember that God is a jealous God and wants our whole heart, if we continue to sin after salvation we must repent and seek forgiveness. By sinning we allow darkness into our lives and what fellowship does light have with darkness? It may seem impossible to some but draw near to God and he will draw near to you and give you strength to overcome and you will inherit the kingdom of God and all its goodness!
